ANCHORS HAVE A VESTED INTEREST IN THE COMMUNITY THEY SERVE
Investing and buying local contributes to the economic health of the downtown. What happens in the surrounding community affects the anchors and vice versa. Recruitment and retention of employees relates to the reality and perception of the anchors’ surroundings. Vibrant communities are an asset and a competitive necessity. Invest/buy local is designed to boost Jackson’s economy and tackle the high commercial vacancy rate downtown. Efforts will be made to promote investing and buying local, encourage increased local purchasing by anchors, and entice anchors’ vendors to invest in a downtown location.
“Invest/Buy Locally.” The independent consultant’s report noted vacant storefronts in our downtown. Populating downtown with more affluent young adults will help create added demand for goods and services. There is also significant procurement activity among the anchor institutions presenting opportunities to localize more purchases. The Anchor Initiative will be active with the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Development Authority and Midtown group promoting downtown for new retail options.
